The picture shows the actual boulder mentioned in the story. It seems it most likely isn't a (human made) monument, though, but a natural remnant of the ice age. They sat on top of the ancient monument. A large boulder, grayish-green with lichen, balancing on top of three smaller rocks atop a hill carpeted in needles.

Why would Abigail hiss and display her teeth if her aim is to feed?

This is just silly. Predators don't behave like that. Instead they try to unnoticed come as close as possible to their prey before actually attacking.
