I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Yes I remember him in the magazines from my youth.
Isn't Bamse origially Swedish?

Sure is, hence the name - bamse means "giant" in Swedish.

It does - but I think it's also become a sort of acronym/nickname for bear, in parallell with the more common "nalle". Or perhaps I'm wrong, but at least it has a kind of "cute" air to it, and I know that Bamse not a too uncommon name for dogs for instance.

AFAIK, Bamse stands for "teddy bear" in Danish.

Alfons Åberg is another well known children's book character in Sweden. But let's not get into what "Alfons" means in Danish...

I know the joke ;) . Here in Germany, Bamse was called Tino Tatz for a while ("Tatze" = "paw").

I'd never even heard of Bamse in the States. He's quite cute.
