LtROI as a Christmas Movie?
Am I the only one who has thought of this? Vampires, a murderous child, bullies, and suicide are weird topics for a holiday film, but I'm thinking its message and overall feeling are appropriate for this time of year.
First of all, there's the idea of hope: Oskar is a lonely kid with no friends, Eli has been isolated from society for centuries, but somehow they find each other and make a connection. There isn't a Christmas Carol-ending where all is forgiven and everyone loves each other, but I like the different-ness and lack of the usual peace and goodwill stuff.
Then there's the snow. It gives the film a melancholy, thoughtful feel instead of just being a seasonal decoration (though it serves that purpose too). I always thought that besides being about love and good feelings, the holidays were a reflective time to think about what is important in your life, which Oskar definitely does when he chooses Eli over a role as a social reject and his sketchy home life.
And the dark spots - obviously, Eli's eating people and such - are not conducive to warm, fuzzy feelings. But who said Christmas has to be all about perpetual cheerfulness? Home Alone has torture, A Christmas Carol has starving children and a dementor-looking ghost, there are even Christmas horror movies - Krampus, for instance. It doesn't have to follow a formula. Also, I think the darkness of LtROI just reinforces the joyful side of it.
What do you think? Can LtROI be seen as a holiday movie (not specifically about Christmas, but for its themes and atmosphere)?

Probably...but I'm not sure.Bloody Mary wrote:Am I the only one who has thought of this?
Absolutely. But only by those whose head is as interesting as yours, and I'm guessing that's about every member of our forum. Good job of bringing all of that together!Bloody Mary wrote:What do you think? Can LtROI be seen as a holiday movie (not specifically about Christmas, but for its themes and atmosphere)?

Yep I agree. After all it's about all those Christmasy things.Hope,love,loyalty,friendship.Strangely, I was thinking about Xmas just a couple of days ago. What presents Eli and Oskar would give each other.Eli might be a little uncertain but I'm sure Oskar would go all out.Thought it might make a nice little story by the more talented writers than I in this forum.

There are a few in the fan art section that are creative and a dumb short story, some goober head wrote with Eli observing Ebenezer Scrooge.ltroifanatic wrote:Yep I agree.

Eli: Ho Ho HORROR!
AAh christmas food, my favorite type of person. A man in a santa costume, just my taste!
I always had this fan-fic idea about their first christmas together. Oskar is ofc already infected, probably in the bloody romantic universe. So, on christmas night they walk around town while evryone is at home with their families. being in a different swedish town, maybe even stockholm. And all cities has big chistmas threes in their centrums time square ish something something.. And they sit down by the three and look up at its lights and Oskar starts to cry because he really misses his mom. But Eli cheers him up and says something like:
"Well I got the best christmas gift of all! YOU!" And then they kiss and play in the snow. Maybe put a lonley alcoholic out of their suffering. Who knows.
Jolly good!
