Eli's posessions

Post by WhiteBackground » Sun Sep 26, 2010 9:19 pm

Hi all.

I thought it would be neat to try to identify, as precisely as possible, the stuff Eli carries around with her. She has toys as well as possibly other items, in the apartment, spread around on the floor and on the table. There are several moments in the movie when they are shown in a way that can allow identification.

From what I could gather, on the table she has:
An old electric lamp.
The Egg, sitting on some box of unclear origin.
Another box with some stuff on it I cannot make out(?)
Rings on a thread.
An old shoe.
A Bunny doll.
Another doll, looks like a monk(?)
A lion paperweight.
A Notebook or a calendar(?)
A drawing of what looks like a boxer (wonder what is it?)
A rope puzzle, or what looks like it. Never heard of those (?)
Some other items I cannot make out.

On the floor I can only identify a doll, a deck of cards, and some kind of board game.

Anyone wants to fill in the gaps? :)

I think that little white bunny is made of wax. And that little doll guy looks like a little Chinaman and he has got a wire stick of some kind in one hand.

She also has a smurf, like Oskar!

That little red cube on top of the box reminds me of those things you use to put chalk on the end of a pool cue. The figure behind that looks like a little black cherub or demon with a big, round head.

There's a 2 of spades on the table after the egg breaks.

In the later shot, it looks like she has one of those old-fashioned games with the glass front and the ball bearing inside that you shoot up and try to get into a hole or indentation. It's sitting on top of a solitaire game. There's also a little set of china dishes on a black tray. The doll I identified as a chinaman could also be a clown from this angle.

That's about all I can make out. Maybe the Blu-Ray people can help.

PS: Lina sure looks skinny in that top frame capture.

The 'smurf' with the white hair to the right of the rings isn't a smurf. It's a troll doll.

My sisters must have had dozens of these, with all different colors of hair. the original, like this one, was white-hared.

Troll doll. Was this from the same era that the Smurfs were popular?

I stand corrected!

I can't be sure, but they may have followed smurfs a year later. Wikipedia says Troll Dolls, 1959, Smurfs, 1958. Smurfs were Belgian and Troll Dolls were Danish. Smurfs were certainly popular in the 80s as well as some of the first troll dolls, at least in the U.S. At any rate, here they all are:

That is a Japanese netsuke (pron. netski), which was a toggle button for Japanese purses. The lion behind it looks like a miniature of the ones at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London.
In the later shot, it looks like she has one of those old-fashioned games with the glass front and the ball bearing inside that you shoot up and try to get into a hole or indentation.
That's a 'Bagatelle' game.

Troll dolls I remember from the late 60's - they came in all shapes and sizes - you could even get pencil toppers. I didn't become aware of Smurfs until much later...

When I was a kid these dolls were everywhere ... but we used to call them "Wishniks"

That fact really has intrigued me, and was discussed here before.

Have you seen similar ones? It does not look much like netsuke...

Interesting, I thought about that but then came to a conclusion that the board in a movie is too thin... However this is probably the right answer.

PS: I wonder how the movie crue collected the items. Bought them all from antiques shop? The Egg, however, is clearly custom-made for the movie. On the last screenshot it is not seen, probably the box it is standing on in the first shot is meant to be its container.

Interestingly enough, the card is not visible in the shots before.
