Could Eli grow older? *May contain spoilers*
I'm not sure which page would be best for this topic but seeing as this seems to be the most popular thread and the question affects both film and book I think it is ok here.
I have discussed it with some very good input from others on another post of mine which meant it has gone off topic from the title of that post and I think it deserves it's on thread. Personally I feel this is really important for the future of Oskar and Eli and any future full novels or films. I feel that it is paramount for the happiness of Oskar and Eli, Oskar can't grow into a man and have a relationship with a 12 year old, none of us want that. Also if any future film is to be made then IMO it HAS to have Kåre and Lina in it. I saw the film before I read the book and it was those two actors that dragged me into this fantastic world and made me buy the book soon after.
So what do you all think? Can Eli age? If so how? I have a few ideas but I'm trying to think of better ones. I know in most vampire fiction they can't age, but this is it's own story and is Eli a vampire or something else that is just best described as a vampire?
Anyway I would love to know what you all think

I think I prefer the story just like it is.Angelmaker wrote:Anyway I would love to know what you all think
If everyone just want to get another day of Oskar and Eli then you are not going to be happy until they both are dead.
Please give them some privacy.

Yeah I partly feel the same too. Just leave it as it is. Maybe that would be the best way. I think it should be left like that if a further isn't as good as the last. However I think that one more could be written/filmed. One last one where we can leave them be knowing all is well. It's funny that you said about the privacy because that is pretty much how I would end the next one, if there was another and it was my choicebore wrote:I think I prefer the story just like it is.Angelmaker wrote:Anyway I would love to know what you all think

Hmm. I don't think Eli can grow older. I think the way the book and movie end is perfect. It's just like any other movie. When the lovers get together at the end you're happy for them. You aren't thinking about what problems they may face in the future. If I allow myself to think about it the only outcomes I can really see are 1)Oskar becomes like Hakan or 2)Eli turns Oskar. A third rather far fetched possibilty is that they discover a "cure" for the infection and Eli becomes a regular person and s/he and Oskar grow old together. Or I guess a fourth possibility is that they are caught, Eli is destroyed and Oskar imprisoned. It's really probably best just to think 'and they lived happily ever after.'

Yeah I definitely see where you are coming from. I would rather it was left where it is than Oskar become like Håkan or be changed by Eli. The cure could be the eventual outcome but only if written in an amazing way. An eventual cure that is, Eli would have to be a 'vampire' for most of the next story. I wouldn't want it to be a saga, just left there. I think it could be done though. I kind of feel that JAL left it open that it was possibleshaggles wrote:Hmm. I don't think Eli can grow older. I agree only part way.
I would have missed some very very good fan fiction if the others around here had thought that way.
Even some of the FF that I did not agree with was well written and reasoned (Oskar at 40 comes to mind).
Most FF has made me think much deeper about what was happening in the movie and book.

While wandering here between posts and FF, I am gradually getting convinced, that I haven't seen anywhere more beautiful madness than on this forum. Clubmeister

I have thought of Eli as the manipulater, whether Eli is using Oskar. But I didn't think that for long and on the DVD commentary JAL said that he had no intention of giving the impression that Eli was going to have Oskar as a Hakan and he wasn't too into interpretaion. What he wrote was how it is. Boy meets vampire and they fall in love. I'm going to write a FF soon but try not to misinterperate anything that JAL wrote but use the gaps in the story, Eli's past and what Eli is to try to expand it. I might be wrong but I think JAL left some gaps and some options open so that he could finalise the story later. That may be a misinterpretation by me thoughthestich wrote:I agree only part way.

I don't know if you've read the book or just seen the movie, but in the book it's pretty clearly stated that Eli's been in his/her present state and age for about 200 years, so based on that I'd say fat chanceAngelmaker wrote:Can Eli age? If so how?

That's unless Eli discovers that when vampires reach a certain age, say 250 years, then they start aging rapidly to magically catch up to Lina's age with side effects of having more feminine features.
Re: Could Eli grow older? *May contain spoilers*
Some on this site have dived into that the blood in the bathtub stoped his aging, so if you removed the blood, Eli would age. But in the movie it's all blankets and he doesn't grow old at all. depends on what you are writing (or making it all up) from. I thought that "that" was a bit out of here. Since Eli doesn't seem to be too happy being a child. (If he was a grown up he wouldn't need nasty grownups around him now would he?)
