Weird Things in Eli's Apartment

Post by a_contemplative_life » Fri Apr 01, 2011 2:25 am

If we assume that nothing in LTROI is there without a reason, then I just have to stop and wonder at some of the things we see in Eli's apartment. Neo-desolate-vampire decor? Here's a list:

1. Picture of motorcross kid on a motorcycle, hanging in the kitchen. What gives? Was Hakan or Eli into motorcycles? There is also a little color picture with a motto immediately above and to the right of this, a portion of which can be seen in the part where Hakan asks Eli not to see Oskar.

2. Big flat box below the aforementioned picture with dancing woman and singing man on it. What was sold in that?

3. Weird, duck-like figurine on window ledge of door leading into kitchen.

4. Red, yellow, and orange half-round paper thingies that say "blllig!" or something like that. A shot from the opposite side indicates there are 5 of these lined up along the bottom edge of the window.

5. Two random pieces of paper taped to same door. Probably said something like:

Hakan--make sure it's fresh!

Hakan--don't forget to bring the jug home this time!

6. White paper wedding bell decoration hanging on the same kitchen door window previously mentioned.

7. It is also interesting that after Eli leaves Oskar's apt. and is seen playing some sort of game and humming to herself, she has a lot more things spread out on the bed/blanket that she did when Oskar came over earlier. It's almost as if she took some time to pull a bunch of her things out and arrange them--solitaire, set of tea dishes (?) on a tray, a paper mache doll, some little game, etc.

The secret life of a lonely little vampire. An interior decorator she is not!

Two other mysteries:

1. How does Eli get that blanket pulled up so neatly over her tub from inside?

2. How did Lacke get in to Eli's apartment at the end?

Hakan--take out the trash!
Hakan--do the dishes!
Hakan--move ,I need to use the wall!
ALL NIGHT LONG! HAKAN, HAKAN, HAKAN!!!! WHAT AM I, SOME KIND OF SLAVE?????!!!!! Oh wait...never mind...I'll ...I'll get the trash... :)

1. This one bothered me the very first time I saw the film.
2. In the book, the door was left unlocked by Eli. The film? No telling :?

Haha this is an interesting topic. I need to go review the film before I can really contribute anything.

But, I always assumed Eli had alot of toys. And considering how she was all happy at Oskars acceptance of her at his apartment, I assumed she felt very "up" so she was enjoying herself, knowing that things were better now.

I've always wondered about the paper wedding bells. It's the most out-of-place item of the whole lot. Surely it wasn't put there randomly there has to be something significant about it.
"Can we die?" "Of course we can." Eli put his hand on his heart, felt the slow beats. Maybe it was because he was a child. Maybe that was why he hadn't put an end to it. The pangs of conscience were weaker than his will to live.

1, 2, 3 ,4 ,6. I think that some of the stuff is left from the apartments previous inhabitants.
5. Probably.

1. In the Swedish commentary TA mentiones that the "blanket" is a blackout curtain from the war. It probably has an elastic border that is supposed to make it stay around a window frame. Eli just needs to push it over the edge of the tub to make it stick like that.

2. Oskar probably didn't lock the door when he went over. Not everyone in Sweden keep their door locked while they are at home.

I remember reading/hearing something about the "theme" of the Eli and Håkan's stuff was things rashed together more or less by chance, typical items you could find eveywhere. So yes, weird things.

I believe this was some kind of electric kitchen stuff, somehow the word "mixmaster" springs into my mind, but tbh I can't recall why.

Yes, TA mentioned they were designed so you can close them from inside. So this is actually high tech vampire stuff. :D

Oskar forgot to lock the door, and I regard this something of a goof.
But thing is in the book, Eli was coming home heavily sunburned and too weak to lock the door, and Lacke arrived there before Oskar. In the film Oskar already was there when Lacke arrived, and it had to be Oskar forgot locking the door.

Not really forgot. Eli could have left it unlocked to make sure that Oskar could walk in. Oskar just left the door in the state it was when he arrived.
