Anyone know any films of similar vein (if you will excuse the horrible pun) to LTROI.
To start off the list;
1 Kisses (2008)
2 Paperhouse (1988)
3 Have Dreams, Will Travel (2007)
P.s. If anyone mentions mentions 'Twilight' I shall personally throttle them.

A few weeks ago I rewatched "E.T. the extra terrestrial" one of my alltime favourites.
Sure it's a big hollywood movie but the similarities between E.T. and LTROI are pretty obvious if you think about it.
- young boy from a damaged family gets "picked up" by a supernatural being
- the movie is set up in the early 80's
- the director (Spielberg) integrates (bad) experiences and memories from his own childhood into to movie to somehow deal with it (like JAL did with LTROI)
I'm sure you can dig out other similarities if you look long enough. Sure the tone is quite different but I couldn't help experiencing LTROI'isch feelings while watching E.T.

A completely different tone, but the Billy Bob Thorton film, Slingblade has some similarities.
-Carl Childers, a mentally challenged man who committed homicide and is viewed as a freak and a monster.
-Carl never really had a childhood or a friend until he meets the boy played by Lucas Black.
-Carl helps the boy out with his bully problem at the end.

WALL•E has a few parallels.
Two lonely characters meet in a desolate place.
The female character is strong and dangerous.
The male one is neither, but he approaches the female character nevertheless.
I actually would recommend it to those of you who were enchanted by the innocent love between Oskar and Eli - a similar theme is central in WALL•E.
And the people at Pixar are amazingly skilled at giving life to their creations.

Also a different tone; however I often think of
Spirited Away.

Agreed. Another animation film that evokes LTROI vibes in me..

"The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has sort of similar wibe to LTROI...and I mean the book, not that strange movie from the 70's.
Similar melancholy and feeling of loneliness, plus a few important lessons about friendship.
Just no vampires.

"Spirited Away" is a great movie.
Check out "Welcome". One of the better films I've seen in a while.

TWILIGHT! No, i'm just joking. Twilight's nothing like LTROI. I don't know any books or films like it. I'm working on the story like it, but without the pervert Hakan or that vampire in the wig character.

Dance of the Damned was this independent flick from fifteen years ago or so, about a lonely young woman with something of a death wish who meets a lonely vampire who needs to feed. As the night goes on, they become friends. She even tastes his blood to get a feel for what being him is like. But rather than die, she flees into his bathroom and pries open the covering of the window, flooding the room with sunlight. He of course can rip the door off its hinges, but the sunlight will kill him. She begs him to stay out. He deliberately enters the light, as the two touch hands...
It isn't quite as good as it sounds, but I rather liked it.
