How do you pronounce his first name? I've been learning a little bit of Swedish, so I would guess it's like "care-eh," kind of like Cary. Is that right or maybe at least close? Pronunciation is important to me, and I want to get it right when I talk about the movie and people ask me who's in it. He did a great job in the movie, by the way, and seems quite talented. If what little I've seen of the Broadcasting Service on YouTube is any indication, he's also a great guitarist. My friend and I couldn't believe that was little Oskar when we saw that vid!

The "a" with a ring above it is a completely different letter from "a" without a ring above it. The å is usually pronounced like o or aw.
Kåre should sound something like core-eh or kaw-reh. For how the r sounds; listen to when Eli says "Hurra" when they enter the basement.
It sounds pretty much the same in Norwegian so you can use this link if you want to listen to it.

Cool. Thanks, Bore!

i do wonder the pronunciation of names like the author, the casts names because i have a bit of a hard time trying to say their name and didn't understand some of the letters like the two dots above a letter.

To make it even more complicated; We pronounce the rest of the vowels slightly different too.

For pronounciation of the letter ä you can listen to when Kåre asks Lina "Är du vampyr?" (When Oskar visits Eli for the first time.)

In the scene where Eli sees the Rubics cube for the first time those letters are also used a lot.
Eli: Är du här igen? / Are you here again?
Oskar: Är du här igen? / Are you here again?
Eli: Gå hem då! / Go home then!
Gå hem själv, jag har bott här längre än du! / Go home yourself, I have lived here longer than you!
Same number of words in the same order with the same meaning except for själv and bott.
Själv doesn't imply if it is yourself or myself and can be used for both.
Bott just means inhabited and can not be used in the sense of being alive.

I wonder if as non-native Swedish speaker I will ever be able to pronounce själv, that sound...

I would settle for something that sounds like the English verb shelve :D

Here is a nice tounge twister if you really want to practice that sound.
Sju sjösjuka sjömän sköttes av sju sköna sjuksköterskor.
Seven seasick seamen were cared for by seven beautiful nurses.

I can help you with the author's name. I found an interview with Lindqvist on YouTube that gave me the correct pronunciation of his middle name: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmY9hMymqkM.

That video is a great statement by JAL. He says so much about what the story means to himself, especially about letting the right one in. Oskar was a bit braver than me in that respect. Or lucky.
