Newly Infected?

Post by Hassildor » Sat Aug 04, 2012 2:48 am

Hello everyone! I believe I may have been infected.

The journey to my eventual infection began when I first saw the Swedish film a few years ago. One night I was browsing Netflix for a good horror movie and Let the Right One In caught my eye. I read the description, as well as a review (You can never be too careful with Netflix instant-view horror.), before diving into the film. I loved it, even recommended it to my brother the next day, but I didn’t see it as anything other than an excellent film.

However, about 3 weeks ago, I saw the Blu-ray of the Swedish film on sale and decided to buy it. Not only did I remember why I had loved it so much after watching it again, but it seemed even better than I had remembered. I saw the American remake a few days later, but it just felt like a needless rehashing of the original. Not that it was a bad film, I just enjoyed it less. A few days after that, I went to my local Barnes and Noble and picked up the book. Now, after finishing the book for the first time, I believe I am what one might call infected. The story, the characters, the atmosphere...none of these have left my head for the past few days. I don’t think I have ever been this fixated on a work of fiction before.

So, does this fade away? Or is this the beginning of a downward spiral? At this point, I might actually be ok with that.

Also, I am definitely planning on getting Let the Old Dreams Die when it is released in English, but what other Lindqvist books would you recommend I read?

And as far as which JAL books, I'll sum it up quick, fast and easy: just read all of them. (when they come out in english, but you'll have to get in line with the rest of us)

Hello :)

A long incubation period, but now another infection confirmed!

Handling the Undead and Harbor have been published in the US, and Little Star is due in the fall. For Let the Old Dreams Die you need to buy that from the UK. The last is due out shortly. It wouldn't hurt to read them in order of publication. All the books share certain things in common, but I think the one that most resembles Let the Right One In is Little Star, even though that description does not begin to capture where that story goes.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

If you're really infected this will not leave you in years and years. Many come here, are hocked and lose it after a few weeks, maybe.. Others stay.
I know LTROI is really good, LTODD is very different than what I expected actually, but you get to know what happened to Eli and Oskar and that's what I cared about.
You should read Little Star. I have read all of lindqvists books, Harbous and handling the undead, paperwalls.. But Little star and LTROI caught me the most. Actually Harbour was a rather heavy read.
Hope you stay infected, cheers! :D

Hi there, Hassildor :)

Welcome to The Infected. May your infection be long lived and invasive  :D

As for Mr. Lindqvist's books, I echo JToede's and gattoparde's suggestions, read them all & read them in order of publication. But watch out for those little phrases that creep up on you and fill your eyes with tears, and make it hard to breathe.

You mentioned that you recommended this wonderful story to your brother, did he watch it? What did he think of it? It is a common experience among The Infected that siblings, and best friends alike, don't appreciate the beauty that is this story as much as we do, if at all. If he wasn't touched by it, don't judge him too harshly, he just wasn't ready for it.

.

PS Check out the FanFiction, there are some truly wonderful stories.

Welcome among the Infected Hassildor!

The Infection is a wonderful thing, and I have yet to be cured. Not that I ever want to be anyway.:D

Welcome aboard the cruise ship "infected"

I recommend the following:
Check out the "tale told by hands". Opened up a whole new vista on the movie for me.

Also check out the fan fiction. IMHO, there is no better out there:
Once Bitten.
The Eli Chronicles
Let Me In 2
Bloody romantic
My Eli: A Childhood Story
While wandering here between posts and FF, I am gradually getting convinced, that I haven't seen anywhere more beautiful madness than on this forum. Clubmeister

Welcome, Hassildor!
I read JAL's other books in the order in which they were translated into English, and while that doesn't hurt, I'd particularly recommend Little Star, due out soon in the US and which is already available from the UK and Australia.

I sort of expected to get answers like these. I guess I’ll just be reading the English ones I can get my hands on first.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
Jameron wrote:You mentioned that you recommended this wonderful story to your brother, did he watch it? What did he think of it?
He actually liked it, but was definitely not infected. I guess certain stories just have a much deeper impact on some people.

I looked into the Fan fiction section a bit, but didn’t want to start anything big until I had actually finished the book. Thanks for the list.
