If I were to recommend LTROI to a friend...

Post by CyberGhostface » Tue Jan 01, 2013 2:15 am

I have a friend who's seen LMI and while she doesn't usually like subtitled films I think I may have convinced her to give LTROI a watch. Should I give her a heads-up about Eli's nude shot? I may be overreacting but it's because of that that I'm kind of hesitant to recommend the film to people who aren't as open to foreign films at least.

I'd let her know if she's under 18...Otherwise you are overreacting. 8-)

How did she react to the scene where Owen spies on Abby while she's getting dressed? If she didn't mention it at all during your discussions, you're probably safe, especially if you explain the reason for it being more explicit in LTROI.

If you think your friend would react negatively to the peeping scene, don't point a finger at it. If you do, she'll not see anything else in the entire film.

If you know your friend would react negatively to the peeping scene, change your mind about her watching the film.
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist

I was actually worried about one of my friends when I watched it with her. I just said beforehand "There's a weird scene coming up, but it's fairly important." (She has a tendency of talking about what's happening when we watch films).

So when the peeping scene happened she's like "Oh. That is a weird scene."

She really enjoyed the film as well. When we walked outside she stood for a moment by the road and waved her hands for a bit. "This is surreal. This doesn't even feel like the real world anymore. It doesn't feel 'real', you know what I mean?"

Yes, I knew exactly what she meant :D

Probably the best strategy is to say as little as possible. Let the movie come to your friend without prior expectations. This is a sneaky movie. :)

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

I wouldn't worry about it. I watched the film with my 15-yr-old daughter and worried about that scene. It came and went with nary a blink of the eye from her.

This. What I tell people nowadays is something like, "The hype spoils this movie. It won't meet your expectations because your expectations will be wrong. Just watch it and see what comes."
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

18, please. i showed it to an 11 yearold and it went fine.
I think you shouldn't ruin the experience for her. Just show it to her and explain after.

People, I hate to spoil the illusion...I don't know where CyberGhostface lives, but here in Texas one can get in serious trouble for recommending or showing a film with even a hint of nudity to a minor...It happened here in my city more than once. People will react differently to movies, books and TV junk....It's just wise to proceed with caution...at least in my corner of the planet.
