I just read this and highly recommend it to anyone who wants some insight what might have transpired between Oskar and Eli in that grove. It fits so well with the story. To Wolfchild I must say you sure know how to call it.a_contemplative_life wrote:Seems to me, having read the spoilers here, that Wolfie is the fan fiction author who came closest to imagining Oskar's turning as JAL did. http://let-the-right-one-in.com/fancontent/ff/letters. Maybe there's a psychic link between JAL and him?
Thoughts about Let The Old Dreams Die !!!SPOILERS!!!

Re: Thoughts about Let The Old Dreams Die !!!SPOILERS!!!
"Can we die?" "Of course we can." Eli put his hand on his heart, felt the slow beats. Maybe it was because he was a child. Maybe that was why he hadn't put an end to it. The pangs of conscience were weaker than his will to live.

very good point there, my friend. it is truly a wonderful thing when a story stirs up the imagination as much as LTROI and LTODD has.JAL fulfilled his promise and, in a sense, gave us Oskar and Eli as we see fit. Whatever happens to them, in our imagination and thoughts, happens

An interesting question raised by LTODD is what motivated Oskar to change his mind about being turned from the end of the LDRKI. I would posit the pool incident and Eli saving his life.

That is an interesting question and I'm sure that's part of it but as for the actual turning point, if IIRC, the only clue we have was where Oskar Eriksson was witnessed exitting the subway at 2 in the morning and stood there as if a great happiness came over him while some drunk was singing a parade march. All of of a sudden he dashed out of the station as if he was in a tremendous hurry to get to whatever made him happy.
I have no idea what this means and would love to hear other's opinions about this. Maybe I'm just looking for something, anything. Apparently it is something JAL is trying to telling us. I also noted the witness at the time was reading a novel aptly named, The Metamorphosis by Kafka.

I thought this was the place in the book where he ran from his drunk father and took the subway home in the middle of the night to return to his Eli. He was happy because he was anticipating seeing her again, and simultaneously was proud of having taken the initiative and left his father. He was free at last.jonjon_z wrote:That is an interesting question and I'm sure that's part of it but as for the actual turning point, if IIRC, the only clue we have was where Oskar Eriksson was witnessed exitting the subway at 2 in the morning and stood there as if a great happiness came over him while some drunk was singing a parade march. We never stop reading, although every book comes to an end, just as we never stop living, although death is certain. (Roberto Bolaño)

Ahh... you have a point you may be correct.

That is the same episode as in LDRKI, albeit now described from the unnamed narrator's point of view. The same reference to the drunk singing Fritiof Andersson's parade march is in LDRKI as well.
I also think it's kind of interesting that while LTODD does give some kind of more detailed solution to the previous open ending of LDRKI regarding what happened to Oskar and Eli after the train journey, it in turn gives an open ending about what actually happened to Stefan and Karin. My first thought upon reading the story was of course that they had gone to Barcelona in order to have a chance of "saving" Stefan from dying. But when I've thought about it a bit longer I'm not as sure. As some people have mentioned, why would Oskar and/or Eli - IF Stefan and Karin manage to find them - even consider turning them? So in my view a just as plausible answer would be that they simply went there in order to find the answer to the riddle that has taken up so many years of Karin's life. Then they may well have been content with letting their lives end; Stefan was terminally ill and Karin was pretty old herself so that's an answer as good as any I'd say.
