What I've written on this board is of course not doing full justice to the story. It is much more to it - IMO it has the same magic and beauty as LtROI, even if it is short. Eli and Oskar are very distant, more like a legend, enveloped (?) by Stefan and Karin (= John and Mia) and on top of that the narrator with no name.
Disapointed was a bit of a poor choicing of words on my behalf admitingly...everything I've read here in this thread just makes me want to read this even more (damn English translations that take time)

And yeah that is the feeling i got from reading the spoilers, that it has the same magic. I'm actually cool with the follow up of Eli and Oskar being told from a distance...I think that is actually a great idea...like you said it becomes a thing of legend if you will...so i think that's a really cool idea

But anyways it was just a weird thought from first reading the spoilers...like I kind of didn't want it to go that way (mainly because I was so used to the unexpected in LTROI) and on the other hand I am extremely happy it did go that way...if that makes sense.

I don't doubt that John hasn't recaptured the magic and like I said I can't wait to it gets an english translation so I can read it. :)

and true you make a good point Drakkar that I didn't think about...in regards to struggling to survive
And then we are left to ponder how Oskar came to the conclusion of wanting to be turned. Was it because he really wanted it because he then could be with ELi forever, or was it because he realized he could freeze to death, and then chose to be turned in order to be with ELi. There is a slight but important differenc between these two arguments.
See that just makes me want to read this even more now :)

I guess part of JAL's challenge was not to bring in any new elements, which weren't present (or hinted at) in LtROI. If he had done that, it could easily been regarded as introducing some kind of Deus Ex Machina.

Like this, for example, which I nicked from "Den enfaldiga mördaren" directed by TA's father  Image

And you could also point out that the angel in front of the other two is none other than Tomas' brother Daniel
(Tomas also has a part in this film, playing a boy aged about twelve or so)

Maybe we've watched the same TV program "Alfredson och söner" (Alfredsons and sons)? :)
I didn't get that Tomas was in the film. Have to rewatch it. I was sitting the first half hour pondering "Could this be Stellan Skarsgård?" and such things makes me inattentive :)

Yes, they mentioned that both Tomas and Daniel are in the film. Daniel was already working as a scenography assistant or something so he was used as the angel of vengeance since he was already there :D . And Tomas plays the son in the family that takes Sven in - I assume that you have also seen the film The Simple-Minded Murder from which the picture is taken?

Those angels look like they have a purpose. I'd stand clear! :D

Yes, I watched "Den enfaldiga mördaren". But I was not expecting Tomas to be in it though..

However, every time someone mentions Deus Ex Machina in LTROI, I can't help but thinking of a Heavenly Host of angels taking Eli & Oskar with them back to heaven, and Oskar can have as much blood pudding he like for the rest of the eternity, and Eli too! :D
But, alas, since editrice expect us to be mentally stable I cannot write that.

Btw, the train time tables Stockholm - Karlstad - Oslo from 1981 just arrived from Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum  :ugeek:

You'd better - especially if you are an evil factory owner and farmer who has the habit of oppressing his tenants and everyone he can squeeze money from. Don't miss the blade Sven - the man in front of the angels - is carrying. You'd not want to get in the way of that.

BTW, Sven is played by none other than Stellan Skarsgård - whom you'll soon be able to see in the Hollywood version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
