When did Oscar's parents divorce ?

Post by neo_cortex » Sat Dec 20, 2014 10:12 pm

In the English translation of LTROI on pgae 60 it says:
They had divorced when Oskar was two.

But on page 212 it says:
His mom and dad had divorced when he was four, but Oskar and his mom had kept coming out on weekends and holidays.

So is it two or four ? Is this a glitch in the translation ? Did anybody else notice this ?

Hi neo-cortex. Welcome to the forum. You will fit in well here because of your inquisitive mind.

Some member who is into the novel and who is bilingual in Swedish and English will know the answer to your two good questions. :)

Hi, and welcome!
Two and four in Swedish as well, shame on John!
Thanks for pointing it out.

Yes, they apparently divorced twice.
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist

Keen eye, I'm sure I've noticed this before, or your mentioning it has given me the idea that I have. (the word cryptomania comes to mind but i know that is completely the wrong word for it)
Tell me, did you notice anything about Virginia in the hospital that seemed to be a continuity error in terms of her straps going from on to off?

I remember thinking this at one point I'll have to check again to find exactly what I mean though.
Welcome to the forum by the way. :)

I don't remember noticing anything. I'd need to check.

Perhaps Oskar doesn't know. Most any events from when he was 2 or 4 years old would have to be retold to him later. He might remember something, such as an argument or an upset parent, but when you are so young, you don't put calendar dates or years to things. So maybe it was when he was two. Maybe it was when he was 4. Ask him on any given day, he might give you any answer in that range and feel confident about it. Yes?
