I stumbled upon this famous Swedish poem by Nils Ferlin with regard to her, Abby being barefoot. She could wear shoes. What does it mean?

What is the poem Barefoot Children about?
The poem is about a person who has lost something important, symbolized by a "word" and a "slip of paper". This can be interpreted as a loss of identity, hope or meaning in life.

Barefoot child
You have lost your word and your slip of paper, you barefoot child of life. Then you sit again on the merchant's stairs and cry so forlornly. What kind of word was it - was it long or short, was it well or badly written? Think now - before we sweep you away, you barefoot child in life.

Early Life
Not a whole lot is known about Eli's background, but what is known is that she was once a boy, but had been castrated by a vampire nobleman in a ritual turned him into a girl and that 'Eli' is short for 'Elias', her real name

That may be true at first, for a while, Oskar comes to terms with the revelation that Eli is in fact a boy. But their bond deepens when Oskar saves Eli from being destroyed by Lacke. Also if Oskar wasn't still in love with Eli they wouldn't have become equals by the time of Let the Old Dreams Die.
