Would you have changed anything?

Re: Would you have changed anything?
No quite, as depending on how it was done Eli would be either a girl or a boy that looks like a girl.

Perhaps, I can do without bathtub filled with blood which Eli uses to sleep/recuperate in. The presence of such a large amount of blood creates a strange inconsistency with the entire concept of Eli having to go out and endanger herself while procuring precious life giving substance from her victims while there's plenty of blood at home. Is the blood used in the tub different from the blood that come out veins of her prey? Where does all the blood for the tub cames from?
Movie version hadled that problem logically and correctly. She/He sleeps in the dry bathtub lined with blankets...
Nothing else. Perfect.

I don't think the novel actuallly specifies anything about that blood.Nightrider wrote:Is the blood used in the tub different from the blood that come out veins of her prey?
We know that Eli can't drink blood that is too old or from dead people. Perhaps he can still sleep in blood that has gone bad?
It could even be that Eli is able to sleep in animal blood but can't drink it.

I agree to that, and it seems JAL himself does, too...Nightrider wrote:Perhaps, I can do without bathtub filled with blood which Eli uses to sleep/recuperate in. That tub of blood annoys me as being nonsensical (Where did it come from?) and impractical (Why was it being wasted?) and impossible (Why isn't it rock-hard by now? How does Eli breathe in that? If she purrs, then obviously she breathes...) and inconsistent (Eli didn't shower before meeting Oskar, yet wasn't dripping with blood when she met him?). Why was it being wasted? Maybe it wasn't, maybe a real vampire can benefit from bathing in blood (and not messed up bluebloods like Bathory).
How does Eli breathe in it? Maybe she doesn't need to breath at all while actually sleeping (did she "purr" in the novel?). Or maybe she somehow does the fish gill thing.
Why wasn't she dripping in blood when she met Oskar? Maybe her skin absorbed the excess.
The one question I can hasard a real guess at has to do with vampire bats: they apparently inject some kind of anticoagulant on initial bite to make blood flow more easily. This would be important since the little things won't necessarily be able to hit a major artery and guzzle the resulting gush, and I've read references to victims of vampire bat bite whose toes wouldn't stop bleeding in what seemed like forever, and the blood supply to the toes is hardly generous.

Re: Would you have changed anything?
From what I gather JAL's vampires don't need to breathe very much, if at all, though Eli does do so in many scenes (in bed with Oskar/holding her breath in the basement etc.) Perhaps with such a slow heart beat, there's no requirement to breathe regularly.
And Virginia discovered she wasn't subconsciously breathing after being turned.
The blood bath would have been problematic for the film as Eli would have emerged naked or semi-naked to kill Lacke and kiss Oskar, unless he bathed fully clothed, which is unlikely.

I would not have edited either one out. I think they both provide creepiest, but they also make us think and visualize. What I mean by that is they create a mental picture in our minds and get the wheels turning, so to speak. Yes, I believe that everything in a book makes one try to visualize, but because these and other instances in the book are impossible, it makes us almost to come up with with a way that they could possibly happen. That make not make any sense to anyone else, but I like the idea of bending things and ideas. I also love all of the creepiness and shock in the book, which, in my opinion, are the things that make the book as interesting as it is. I do admit that I got a bit nauseous at times while reading the novel, but I don't see it being any different that horror films that make us a bit queasy except, instead of having the visual created for you, you have to imagine it yourself. each time I read these or any parts, I come up with a different visual.
I hope this make at least some sense to you guys

I feel exactly the same way. For odd reason, i am never confortable with revolting scenes, but i'm ok with Let The Right One In novel. I'm still reading it. I don't know why i'm comfortable with this book. Maybe it has to do with my empathy towards Eli. I even try visualizing the scenes in my head in this novel.
