Well, Oskar did have exeptionally high volume on. I remember from the novel that it described he could hear the music clearly even when it was Eli who had the headphones. That is WAY TO LOUD for vampire ears ;) .

Also, Eli is a child of the 18th centuary, he is not used to rock music.

or if it's supposed to be some sort of "hells music" so vampires can't listen to it.
 If that was so, vampires would be proven of being "holy" in nature instead of demonic. I don't think they are either in LTROI though. I wonder what effect psalms would have on Eli, probably none as there is no support for Eli being weak against "holy".

In fact, it is not immpossible that hallowed ground may be more accessible to vampires and do not require invitation becuase of the connection to the spirit world. That of course depends if LTROI vampire are supernatural in nature or not, and if so, what kind? .

I think that may have been the case, remember people listen to music at different volumes. I think it Oskar may have just been listening to a particularly loud song at a high volume and that Eli didn't expect the volume of the music to be that loud. Which could have hurt Eli's highten sense of hearing.
Maybe this is going a little far, but the last time he listened to his music player was when he was on the bus (if im not misstaken), and we all know that we turn our volume up since there is a lot of background noise on the bus ;)

Agreed, he has good taste in music. John listened to Lifelines by Aha 666 times while writing Harbour, but hopefully he'll never sink to the level of playing Kiss.. :D

I figured it was the heightened hearing since Virginia could hear the neighbors spoons and things when she was infected ;)
Well, the way I imagine it, Eli and Oskar are happy forever being vampires, working seasonally at a blood-bank with poor book-keeping skills.

Spot on Luftwaffles. Eli also had a super-human sense of smell, as shown in the cancer woman's house.
"Soap, sweat, the smell of old skin ... and that hospital smell... something else that was the woman's own smell."

As for KISS, I only feel pity for millionaire bands that keep flogging a dead horse, ridiculous and pathetic.

Okay... POP QUIZ time... Get out your #2 pencils.

from Let the Right One In (p. 64):
“Great.”
Oskar had the double album Alive by KISS, had bought it a few months ago but never listened to it. Mostly looked at the pictures from their concerts. Their made-up faces were cool. Like live horror figures. And “Beth,” the one where Peter Criss sang, he actually liked, but all the other songs were too . . . there was no melody or anything. Maybe Destroyer was better.
Tommy got up to leave. Oskar squeezed the box.
Okay, KISS fans (or whatever you are) what part of Oskar's statement in the above doesn't make sense - due to his having never listened to the Alive album?

When being bad-arse types only appeal to the comfortable middle-classes, hey, it time to wrap it up boys.
There's a fine line between being meaningful and becoming a sad/self parody. The Rolling Stones don't even get they're way past it. So I guess a one-trick band like KISS wouldn't even notice they're has-beens.
