This too. Jfc, it's a wonder I even got through this book... and loved it.

By far it was PEDO Hakan! I actually stopped reading the book at the library POV. Just too much! I ended up reading through over the next few days but it was a hard read. Also what the did to my Eli was truly heart breaking!

The almost rape was awful indeed, I think I made a (freaked out/funny) face while I read that part. And the casteration was also scary.

i may have already said it, but yes, i made a freaked out face when i read it. When i tried to read the book outloud, i stumbled because i couldn't bare to say what was going on in these parts.intrige wrote:The almost rape was awful indeed, I think I made a (freaked out/funny) face while I read that part. Run, and you might live.
Stay, and you might die.
However, nothing is certain.

I think JAL choosing to include the Hakan character was no accident or just to "spice up" his novel.By far it was PEDO Hakan! I actually stopped reading the book at the library POV. Just too much! I ended up reading through over the next few days but it was a hard read.
The situation of Hakan and Eli have obvious parallels in that they were both ostensible decent people, but both subjected to forces over which they had little control.
JAL could have chosen a psychopath or gormless idiot to help Eli, but Hakan was highly educated, could quote from classic literature, had an acute awareness of (though self-justifying) idea of morality. His one character flaw (pedophilia) is much like Eli's, vampireism.
The moral inconsistencies Hakan had, made him the perfect foil for the Eli character. Both would much rather not do what they do, be someone else, but each is trapped in a life not of their own choosing.

Both the part when Håkan tries to rape Eli and when Tommy was locked in the cellar. It is also really creepy when Staffan listens to Tommy singing that child song over and over while he is bashing on Håkans remains.

For me the creepiest part was when Virginia realizes her infection is alive inside of her. JAL really did an amazing job of showing just how terrifying it would be and he did it in a very realistic way. Hakan turning into a undead creature was great but didnt creep me out too much because it was a little over the top although great. But Virginia's "not alone" moment really sent chills down my spine.
