What I Will Hate About The Epilogue

Post by Wolfchild » Mon Jun 28, 2010 6:44 pm

It come out in Swedish, and then I will have to hear all about it for a couple of years before it ever gets published in English. I will likely know every detail of it before I can read even a single word of it. :(

Oh, woe is me!
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Whew! I thought you were going to remind us that the outcome has to be worked into the canon here!

Although...

I whined about the same thing some time back. (and it was high pitched, little girl whining at that :) ) It was suggested to me that this would not be an obstacle to my being able to read it if I put my mind to it. ;)

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Be careful, Wolfie. Now we know that a) you are not Swedish and b) your first language is English. Ha!

(What? So far it wasn't obvious to me. *shrugs*)

But come on guys, do what that genius Micro-J has in mind. Order it from Sweden, grab a dictionary and torture yourself with translating from page to page. At least it'll last longer than if you were reading it in English.
And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past.

Well you've mentioned yourself before that there is an unofficial translation of The Final Handling floating around on the net, not sure whether you've read it and in that case if it was worth reading. It's not unlikely something similar will happen with this story, and if the translation is good enough perhaps you won't suffer too much...

You don't absolutely have to do that. Get a copy of the Swedish original, and then use the Google Translator to read it. It would be time-consuming, but it could be done. You could learn a little of the language as a bonus.

Of course, you might have to turn a blind eye to comments about it on the forum. Can you resist the temptation????? :D

Actually the latter doesn't automatically follow (though I'd be very surprised if it were otherwise). It's likely to be translated into English, if at all, sooner than any other language. Actually I'd prefer to read it in English than in my native language, as English is at least vaguely related to Swedish.

This makes sense, I have to admit, especially the "sooner" part, after all, this is the reason why I've been reading John's work in English instead of good ol' Hungarian.

Why do you think there is a special group of moderators just for this section about the novel? I originally wasn't going to read the novel, but I still wanted every post to be read by some sort of adult.

Now maybe I'll have to create a forum area just for the epilogue, and make some Svenskaphone the moderator of it. Where in the world am I going to find a Svenskaphone who can mimic adult behavior?
