Hello everyone
When Oskar borrows his music player to Eli she can't stand the KISS music, why is that?
The only thing I can think of is that she either hates rock/metal music personally, or if it's supposed to be some sort of "hells music" so vampires can't listen to it.
But if it's beacuse of a personal taste it seems kind of odd to throw it away like that
What do you guys think?

The impression that I got from this passage is that the music was just too loud and hurt her ears. Perhaps she had never heard loud music through earphones. The loudness might have been too much for her ears. Perhaps it frightened her. There's a number of possibilities here. I doubt it was an aversion to KISS.
But then, it MIGHT have been.

gary13136 is right. Oskar had left the volume too loud, and Eli's sensitive Vampire ears couldn't take it. It hurt her ears, so she reflexively tore off the earphones.

I think sheer volume was most of it. We know from Virginia's transitional phase that senses are heightened, and I'll bet Eli's very quiet lifestyle has done nothing to accustom her to loud or prolonged noise.
Modern popular music a la Kiss or AC/DC (and the general like) departs from traditional models in many ways; deliberately less well structured and more prone to dissonance. Much more emphatic, more primal, and often much angrier. If Eli "grew up" and spent much of her time appreciating the classics, folk music and the like - the kinds of music that'd be most common before the past handful of decades, in other words - I'd think modern rock's savagery may have contributed significantly to her discomfort.

Oskar didn't like KISS very much himself. The only reason he had a KISS record apparently was that he liked the pictures on the sleeve. Oskar preferred melodic, happy music, like Flickan i hagen performed by Vikingarna, and Eli agreed - to Oskar's surprise. That tune is very far from KISS, I can tell you...
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist

Which he tore down the morning after Eli had visited him. He didn't like KISS, I think he listened to it because he thought he ought to, maybe that was the kind of music his classmates talked about.
It seems this is an autobiographical aspect of JAL. He still appears to prefer a different kind of music...

I think that may have been the case, remember people listen to music at different volumes. I think it Oskar may have just been listening to a particularly loud song at a high volume and that Eli didn't expect the volume of the music to be that loud. Which could have hurt Eli's highten sense of hearing.
She pushed in the button, and even from his armchair Oskar could hear the whispery, nosiy jangle of guitars, drums and vocals. She had ended up in the middle of one of the heavier songs.
Eli's eyes opened wide m she screamed in pain.
