Case 39 didn't do that much better IIRC. It beating LMI was only relevant in that it was a film that had been shelved for four years and had been released in other countries, but it performed poorly as well.

And the horror genre is alive and well with Paranormal Activity 2 pulling in over 40 million dollars over the weekend. Still surprised that LMI did as poorly as it did. Maybe it was just too sophisticated for American audiences or maybe the word remake is driving them away.

Maybe the "Love" part just isn't in vogue right now?

I guess the only love that is popular with American audiences is the sugary Twilight type that causes diabetes.

I guess that's because that kind of "love" is easy to stomach and reeks of fairytale-like "happy ever after".

I think it's true that most of the movie-going public, be they domestic or foreign, prefer movies with definite upbeat endings. And as we all know with both LTROI and LMI, it can be rather difficult to read upbeat into either of these movies. I personally can find a silver lining here, and I think that's true of most of the forum regulars. But it just isn't true of most of the movie-going public. Also, I'm sure there are other reasons as well. No graphic sex (well--very little), not enough graphic violence and gore, very little action, etc. And then there's the homosexual and pedophilia angle that no doubt upsets a number of people.

It all comes down to the fact that there are a number of things here that can upset people and turn them off. LTROI and LMI--definitely not for the majority.

Plus that kind of love tends to equal sex in American culture and film, which would be just 9th level of hell wrong considering the ages of the characters.

A loss of $5,000,000USD may be "almost" in your universe, but it sure wouldn't be in mine.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.
