Stuff gets leaked all the time. With film scripts, its par for the course. Scripts get leaked regularly, and in some rare occasions, high-profile films get leaked early.

The last Harry Potter book had a lot of security to prevent leakage, and yet the entire book was scanned ahead of time a week before its release. And I have to imagine that this film has less security on it than the last Harry Potter book.

Only time will tell, but I am completely positive that this script is legitimate.

I could write my own fake script. It would be fun. :)

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Not really a spoiler, but what the heck...

And if you did, I guarantee you it would be at least 79.3% better. :D

I finished reading the screenplay last night and I must say I really liked it for the most part. While it's true that some scenes, such as the initial encounter with Abby and the Rubik's cube scene, not to mention the pool sequence, mimic those in the original film closely, there were enough small additions to the story and extensions to familiar scenes to make the movie its own entity in my eyes and not an outright retread. Another plus is that, as written, the movie is definitely rated-R material and not watered-down teenage fodder. With that said, if I was Reeves, I'd definitely lose the heavy-handed Owen-is-the-next-caretaker hints, which cast a shadow on Abby's intentions and ruin what is essentially supposed to be a love story. I also think playing "Mad World" over the scene where Owen and Abby part is a horrible idea and would take away greatly from what is supposed to be an emotionally resonant scene. Hopefully, since that first draft was written, Reeves has realized that a haunting instrumental piece, like "Eli's Theme," would be more appropriate, not to mention incredibly more effective. By the way, I didn't see the character of Seth, whom I thought might be a substitute for Tommy, mentioned at all in the screenplay. I assume he is present in the second draft.

There is even a place to upload it here. :D
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Guys, first draft scripts suck.

All of them.

No exceptions.

That's why it's a first draft. ;)

It's mostly just to get a basic "blob" of a story out on paper so you can sculpt the finer details and/or make major changes if necessary. It'd be difficult to fine-tune a machine if you didn't at least have all the assemblies built, yes? You need something on paper you can look at and show to other people, something basic you can work with.

Oh, give it a chance! Come on. First draft is not finished product.
gattoparde59 wrote:It would be cool to have a copy, even if I don't read it until after I see the movie. First drafts of scripts can vary quite a bit from the final script, or is it the "shooting script?"
The first draft is what the writer turns in first. It's lumpy and often wouldn't work if you just filmed it then -- then the production company either asks for a second draft from the same writer, or assigns other writers to the project for a second draft. Then sometimes you get a third and a fourth draft, depending on a lot of things, and a lot of things can change. All those writers get a writing credit when the film opens. (and they all get paid for each draft)

The shooting script is what they go to film with, and certain directors have the attitude that the screenplay is the Bible, and nothing can or should be altered. Other directors like to play with it a bit. It just depends on their working style. I don't know how Matt Reeves works!

(I didn't read it, I don't want to. I don't care. I want to see the movie.)

Even so, first drafts can give you an idea of what to expect. For example, the first draft of Rob Zombie's Halloween remake, while a bit different in a number of ways from the finished product, proved to be a fairly accurate representation of how it turned out in the end.

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of stuff from the script are changed or omitted, but I don't see it being completely rewritten (which is what it would need IMO to be good).

I was actually laughing when I read he wants to use this song. Since Donnie Darko (Oh yeah, a horror-drama set in the '80s including "Mad World" in a climatic scene? Your originality just blown my mind away, Matt. 8-) ) this song could always pushed me close to tears, even when I heard it under The Crazies trailer, but with LTROI it's just... meh, it would be waaay typical and unsurprising - also, a lot weaker than "Eli's Theme", which is my number one "I got something in my eye" song, just like for the most of you. Too much of a cliché, I guess. Dunno.

I have to post this, but with a warning: if you don't want to stop taking "Mad World" seriously, don't watch this. :D
And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past.

Bwahahaha!!! I love Battlefield Bad Company! 1 and 2, great games and great funny bits in the cutscenes.
And I agree about the use (overuse) of that wonderful song.
Du måste bjuda in mig...or else!
