Re: Deleted Scenes
I was going to say that this scene does suggest some things from the book even if not quite the same. They play together quite a bit in the book while there is very little of that in the movie.Sam wrote:Well, wasnt that a game his mom played with him when he was little? Its fitting in the book, but maybe in the movie you cannot really explain that. Too little time?
I really hate to ask such a question, but... is that in the book? I just read it but I cannot remember.Oskar teaching Eli how to be a kid. "Don't you know anything?" The body language for this game speaks volumes. Love that growl at the end from Eli.
I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Maybe trim down the scene with the cats. Or maybe that just SEEMS to go on forever.dongregg wrote:Yeah, Trige, that's what I'm talking about. I wish they had trimmed some other scenes (like Lacke wandering around Eli's apartment for way too long, or maybe Jocke in the ice). Not saying cut them, just trim them. The bulleri bulleri bock scene could have fit in, although I understand that the slap wouldn't have.dongregg wrote:I think the bulleri bulleri bock scene would have showed us that they really did play together like two kids. I think leaving that scene out means we don't have as strong a foundation as we might have for why Eli came back -- the joy she feels when they are together -- to play like kids, beyond walking around or talking on the jungle gym.

Re: Deleted Scenes
I love the scene when Oskar hits Eli then feels terrible about it and lays next to her.In such a charming childlike way he tries to redeem himself and sorta growls like a monster then does it again innocently trying to make up for hitting her. You don't know how she's going to take it but have a feeling she's gonna growl back like some monster, baring her fangs but she doesn't. I half hoped she would growl like real monster but she doesn't. She growls just like a kid and smiles. So touching.
Please Oskar.Be me for a little while.

TA said killing a pig would be bad karma, so he scratched it. However, just the mysterious "Be me a little" scene didn't clarify anything, either. While it isn't canonical, Eli could have just told Oskar. Otherwise, there are ways to show a flashback (which TA also scratched, I think) without making the whole story about that.Jameron wrote:In what way, a mistake?seigezunt wrote: which kind of shows to me that going with a scene that showed how Eli became infected, as originally planned, would have been a mistake.

Whatever. The film is everything it needed to be, so that's enough.

Re: Deleted Scenes
While I know the whole Zombie Hakan thing was best left out of the film, I reckon the Hakan and Tommy basement scene was the most absolutely terrifying scene I have ever read. But probably far less terrifying had it been filmed.

The hissing scene has got to be one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. It was a shame that it was removed but I understand why they did.

I think it would have added an element of off-the-chart violence that, while in keeping with the book, would have derailed the film, in my opinion. I think the genius of the film is in what is concealed and left a mystery. For instance, compare the pool scenes in LTROI and LMI. I think having the killing of the bullies offscreen is much more effective. The "crotch shot" in LTROI is both bewildering and almost subliminal. I think a graphic flashback scene would have been a jarring intrusion into the film, which broke my heart with its sweetness. Personally, while I enjoyed the book, I doubt I would have been infected if that level of disturbing violence had been included. The book and the film occupy different places for me, and while Eli's castration and infection is "canon," I don't see elaborating upon it as something the film needed.
I like that the film is missing Eli's origin story. It allows the imagination to run rampant. Something sorely missing from many American films, which currently seem obsessed with plodding origin stories.
Hope that helps.
