For all we know, the painting is there for contrast or as a way of bringing up the topic of vampires.Lacenaire wrote: As I have already written, personally I can hardly think of an example of a painting that is less suitable as a representation of the relationship between Eli and Oskar, unless of course you are a fan of the view that Eli sexually dominates Oskar.

Re: Penguin Classics cover
Of course my "objection" was to your use of the plural form "Vampyren", which would have made a great deal of difference, I think.drakkar wrote:The official name of the painting is Vampyr.
That is the name used by the Munch Museum/Gallery and that's fine with me.
I have often remarked that some many things in LTROI are so ambiguous that is like a mirror: When people try to fill in the blanks, they end up filling them in with themselves.

"Vampyren" isn't plural form however, it is definite form singular, i.e. it means "The Vampire"Lacenaire wrote:Of course my "objection" was to your use of the plural form "Vampyren", which would have made a great deal of difference, I think.drakkar wrote:The official name of the painting is Vampyr.

Re: Penguin Classics cover
@lacenaire: No, you're wrong. I probably shouldn't pursue this non-issue, but anyway:
Vampyren is particular (is that what you call it?) not plural. Plural is Vampyrene (or Vampyrane, Vampyran, Vampyrin' etc.. - Norway is a couple of thousand km long and has a lot of dialects).

You beat me to it by a few minutes, but since I was sitting by the boathouse in the sun and wind struggling with my post for so long I refuse to delete it!StefL wrote:"Vampyren" isn't plural form however, it is definite form singular, i.e. it means "The Vampire"Lacenaire wrote:Of course my "objection" was to your use of the plural form "Vampyren", which would have made a great deal of difference, I think.drakkar wrote:The official name of the painting is Vampyr.

Oh, well, I guess you can't win them all...
(Does anone know if that is also true in Danish and Icelandic?)
P.S. However, just this moment Spain won the World Cup, as I had predicted in the World Cup thread before the semi-finals, so I do also get to win some of them... (And it gives Paul the Octopus an perfect record of 7 consecutive correct predictions).

Danish yes. It is very similar to Norwegian (no wonder, Norway and Denmark was together for a few hundred years). Icelandic: I need some time; I'm on holyday for another week and only got a mobile to communicate/surf with...

It goes over my head why something like this isn't already underway.
