I heard this recently and it seems appropriate.

The Cult - She sells Sanctuary

Oh the heads that turn
Make my back burn
And those heads that turn
Make my back, make my back burn

The sparkle in your eyes
Keeps me alive
And the sparkle in your eyes
Keeps me alive, keeps me alive

The world
And the world turns around
The world and the world, yeah
The world drags me down

Oh, the heads that turn
Make my back burn
And the heads that turn
Make my back, make my back burn, yeah
Yeah-hey

The fire in your eyes
Keeps me alive
And the fire in your eyes
Keeps me alive

I'm sure in her you'll find
The Sanctuary
I'm sure in her you'll find
The Sanctuary

And the world
And the world turns around
And the world and the world
Yeah, the world drags me down

And the world
Yeah the world turns arond
And the world and the world
The world drags me down

I am pretty big fan of The Cult. It never occurred to me associate this song with this story. Good call.

Although this song wasn't released until 1985, and even then I doubt the The Cult would have had much market penetration in early 1980's upstate New Mexico. ;)

More is the pity.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

I'm mostly going for mood, feel, and theme rather than if they could actually work for the movie:

Linkin Park - My December
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI59cpkFxPo
Reminds me of Oskar's loneliness, how sad and isolated he is before meeting Eli.

Leona Lewis - Run (Snow Patrol Cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqHgPUgj9c8
Makes me think of when Eli leaves Oskar, how utterly broken he feels.

Aphex Twin - Nannou
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaXqU7hVVhI
The sounds of the music box make me think of Oskar and Eli's playfulness, how much fun they have together. The song's sort of stripped-down quality makes it feel like it's more isolated, like it's about them and how separate they are from the rest of the world.

Other than that, I'm still of the opinion Let the Right One Slip In should play during the credits.

"Oskar saw through Eli's eyes. And what he saw was...himself. Only much better, more handsome, stronger than what he thought of himself. Seen with love."

[quote="pristidae"]Here are two good ones:

1) An amazing song about a love-sick vampire that is therefore quite appropriate for LTROI:

BAND: Kings of Leon
SONG: Closer

That is the coolest, most apropos use of that song I have ever seen.

Omg I know that song from the Keane cover, used to love it. I never heard to the original to be honest.

Almost anything from the amazing band Sigur Rós goes great with Let the Right One In.

Another song from the early 80's that I heard recently, Rufus & Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody
Captured effortlessly
That's the way it was
Happened so naturally
I did not know it was love
The next thing I felt was
You holding me close
What was I gonna do?
I let myself go

And now we're flyin' through the stars
I hope this night will last forever

I've been waitin' for you
It's been so long
I knew just what I would do
When I heard your song
Filled my heart with your bliss
Gave me freedom
You knew I could not resist
I needed someone

And now we're flyin' through the stars
I hope this night will last forever
Oh oh oh oh

Chorus:
Ain't nobody
Loves me better
Makes me happy
Makes me feel this way
Ain't nobody
Loves me better than you

I wait for night time to come
And bring you to me
Can't believe I'm the one
I was so lonely
I feel like no one could feel
I must be dreamin'
I want this dream to be real
I need this feelin'

I make my wish upon a star
And hope this night will last forever

Chorus

And first you put your arms around me
Then you put your charms around me
I can't resist this sweet surrender
Oh my nights are warm and tender
We stare into each other's eyes
And what we see is no surprise
Got a feeling most with treasure
And a love so deep we cannot measure

Chorus
