UK DVD Commentary

Post by Wolfchild » Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:23 pm

I like JAL's closing words from the UK DVD audio commentary track:
...remember to be nice to people. They might get supernatural help and come after your head later.
I finally got the transcript finished up. It's posted on my web page.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Ah, first time I listened that, I was bursting into laughs at some points. Never thought that it could happen when I'm watching LTROI. :ugeek:
And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past.

I got a copy of the UK DVD recently, even though I have to watch it on my computer. The commentary was the best part of it, not surprisingly. I especially liked the author's and director's comments on how they viewed the story. Alfredson pointedly shot-down the "Oskar's dad is gay" idea.

From several of the author's comments, I had the impression that some things in the story brought back sad memories for him. I believe he had previously stated that several things in the story were inspired by his own experiences.

On a side note, the prick Aflredson mentions means dot or period if you translate it to English. From IMDB, I forgot which poster mentions this is a common mistake of Swedes. It is not supposed to be offensive which explains why JAL chuckles when TA says prick. I believe he is describing a yellow smiley with sunglasses and a ciggy.
Låt den rätte komma in in both its printed and celluloid form is a slow acting poison. You will be poisoned white. White from arsenic and innocence.

Yup, this is classic "swenglish." Dot in Swedish = Prick, or Dots = Prickar in plural. As many Swedes are aware, the word "prick" does exist in the english language (but with an entirely different meaning, hrrm). Some who aren't fluent in english make the blunder of not translating it in their heads properly and just go through with saying "pricks" (which is indeed the correct plural inflection) instead of "dots". The brain takes a faulty shortcut so to speak, mixing both languages.

Classic Swenglish joke, which is a true story according to myth: Swedish guy lives in New York, his newly found friends ask him for his name. "My name is Pär. P-A-R, but with two pricks over the A."

And yes, the commentary is great. I especially like the passion when Alfredson talks about the little things that are hard to miss, like that he says most directors only bring in things precisely from 1982 when making a movie presenting itself in that era. He further comments it should obviously be things from 1982 AND OLDER if you want to make the enviroment feel real and not just like a set. I snickered when he kind of pointed at a car in the background in a scene and almost shouts: "That car is a xxx model and it is from the 60's!" ;)

He seemed very proud of the bedroom scene. And rightfully so.

I liked when a particular style of hat was described as a "mink pussy" :)

Actually hearing John's voice as he describes how the scenes of Oskar and his father broke his heart... where he whispers "This one"... it broke my heart to hear him say it.

I believe that this wonderful story did not come to him without cost.

It must have been painful to write it, but I hope it had a cathartic effect.
