It would seem that the uproar over the changed subtitles was because those who had seen the movie before it came out on DVD preferred the original subtitles. So one is left wondering why someone decided to change the subtitles anyway. Also, one wonders if the director had a personal preference in the way the Swedish was interpreted, or indeed if he might have cared less.

When I saw that the subtitles had been changed, I was somewhat surprised, but at the same time, I wasn't outraged as so many were.

Just one more mystery in a movie of mysteries.

In a Q&A session in London after a screening of LTROI, Tomas said that he "hated it" that the subtitles had been changed.

I have just noticed that getcloser.com, which hosted the video of that Q&A session has shut down. I has saved off a copy of the video, but I now find that the audio is a bit messed up. Does anyone know if it is available somewhere else? Apparently hmv owned that site, but I don't see this video anywhere on their current site. :(
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Changed from theatrical subs, I take it. I never saw it in the theater, so I only have the subs via amazon prime, and my dvd, to go by. How different are they? Are they less accurate?

Yeah, looks like Wolfchild's page wasn't made with a mobile view in mind. I tried checking on my phone, but I think the only option is to view it on a computer if the content is to display properly.
