I suspect some of this phenomenon arises from people tending to disparage what they don't understand.

As Drakker shared:
Lack of "bandwidth" would account for a reaction of "meh", but not for the disparaging comments.drakkar wrote:I've shown the film to my friends two times. Some of them were not very interested, while others (including my wife) thought it was a beautiful story. But, alas, too violent and explicit. It was like the bandwidth of the film was too big for them, they were caught up in the scenes like death of Håkan, rendered unable to take in tender and beautiful parts of the story.
Which would be more of a defensive response: "I know there's cool stuff here that I don't understand, and that makes me feel like an idiot. It must be the film's fault."sauvin wrote:I suspect some of this phenomenon arises from people tending to disparage what they don't understand.

I'm usually torn about squaring off against the trolls. In the end, it's probably better just to start a new topic on some interesting aspect of the film that might attract the curious, but it's a hard urge to resist.

oooh thats true!Jameron wrote:It's not just Let The Right One In, it's pretty much every film out there.a_contemplative_life wrote:I don't get it.
It is a sad reflection on society, that when people feel there are no consequences for their actions then there are no limits to what they can do. Self discipline, self control, and respect for others seem to be a thing of the past.
Thank goodness for this oasis of sanity, amid the chaos.

Early on I used get very indignant about what I perceived was an unfair treatment of the movie I loved with all my being. It's as if I felt that I was defending a family member from impending doom.
Later, I realized that I was fighting a losing battle. IMDB is full of people who do not get this movie, will not get this movie or simply just want to create friction on any forum they visit. It is so much better to turn blind eye to another torrent of inane criticism than engage in futile and pointless skirmish with someone who will NEVER GET IT....
I do agree with ACL...It is hard to resist squaring off against the trolls.

Re: Why Do Some People on IMDB Feel Compelled to Trash LTROI
There's a thing that occupies me recently. Many people who interpret the film in the "Eli grooms Oskar" way seem to be very appalled by the gender dysphoria elements. In the past months I have made several friends on the transgender spectrum, and once you see things from their perspective and get a glimpse at the strong hostility they are being confronted with from all sides, even within their own ranks, one can't help but see that exactly sort of hostility in certain negative comments on LTROI, too (i.e. the "Eli is a homosexual paedophile predator" approach). So right now I'm strongly endorsing our favourite vampire film to my transgender friends, since while the story doesn't purposefully address the subject of transgenderism per se, its plea for unconditional love in combination with Eli's gender dysphoria nontheless gives it an implicit anti-transphobia message.

You've pretty much hit it on the head, I think. Well said.TΛPETRVE wrote:There's a thing that occupies me recently. IMDB? I had forgotten about it, until a_c_l brought it up.
I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Re: Why Do Some People on IMDB Feel Compelled to Trash LTROI
For over a year i recommend LTROI to eeeeverybody i know...
A lot of my friends already saw it till now and most of them like it but can't understand the infection
But shortly i heard one opinion that really left me speechless. A working colleague saw LTROI and LMI and after watching both she said to me that she thinks that LMI is better because "the actress who played Abby is much more attractive then the actress who played Eli" so she can feel more for Abby then for Eli....
I know everybody has the right to their own opinion and its not about liking LTROI or LMI more, or liking Lina Leandersson or Cloey Moretz more, but i was so offended about the reason WHY she liked LMI more...
it was the most superficial opinion i ever heard about these two movies. How can someone possible rate such great movies in such a way

Meh, it's IMDB. A cesspool of trolls, fanboys and morons. Best not to take the place too seriously I find
Or at least that's what I've learned
