favorite scenes in LTROI

Post by daimonos » Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:33 pm

Wondering what everybody's favorite scene is from LOTROI. This Friday, in my Greek drama course, we were told to bring in our favorite film so that we can show other students it, in hopes to introduce people to "must watch films". We all get a 5-10 minute window where we get to show people a scene to introduce others to the film. I am having difficulty coming up with a scene that would be suitable to show the class. Help me by giving me some ideas!

The not-quite-long-enough bit between the beginning and the end, and, in no order of priority;

The Falling Snow.

The Not-Nomming-Oskar scenes at the jungle gym.

The Candy Store Hug.

The Blood Pact [That Goes Horribly Sideways].

The Sleepover.

The 'are you a vampyr?' scene at Eli's flat.

The Kiss.

**

Have the lights down, and the sound well up, and the Swedish-language DVD with the English subtitles...?

[That will be $45, ex tax ;) ]

What are the requirements for this assignment? The most Greek tragedy part I can think of is the part where Eli comes in uninvited followed by the "be me a little" part. Bloody Eli and the dialogue, you can't go wrong with that part.

@DMt, thanks for quoting me in your signature. I don't see that very often.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Definitely the pool scene. It pretty much sums up what the film is about and it would entice people to watch it.

It's really not an assignment. It is just the last class of the semester so the teacher decided it would be "fun" if everybody in class brought in a movie or book that they felt is a must see or must read.

I could easily recommend either of my two favorite scenes: the Bed Scene or the Are You A Vampire? scene.

The "Bed Scene" is nice because at its heart, this story is a love story. In this scene the love element comes to the fore, and also on display are many of the other elements that make this film so great: the dialogue is excellent, Kåre and Lina's acting is great, and the excellent cinematography is also showcased. The only things missing are the vampire aspect of the story, and it does not have any of Johan's marvelous score. Although you can see dried blood on Eli's face, out of context it would not be obvious what it was.

The "Are You A Vampire?" scene would also be a good choice. Once again, Kåre and Lina are great. While the cinematography is not obviously technically demanding, this scene does demonstrate the extremely shallow depth of focus that is used repeatedly throughout the film. What really makes this scene one of my favorites is that dramatically there is just so much going on in this deceptively simple scene. I wrote about this a bit here. This scene really showcases the complexity present both in the script itself and in Tomas Alfredson's shooting of it.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

If you got the right clips lined up right, sequentially and making summarised narrative sense, you could just blast them with...the lot, in 10 minutes...

Hit the department's budget for a large carton of Kleenex first, though, you don't want to be paying for those yourself.

And lower the lights, close the curtains...

My favorite scene has been the Candy Store scene since the first time I witnessed it.

Here we have an example of Oskar's generosity when he offers Eli some of his candy which he seems to have bought for the sole purpose of sharing with somebody he really likes something he really likes. She refuses (a little strange for any 12 year old) then tries a piece anyway knowing full well what is going to happen next. An attempt/sacrifice to salvage Oskar's good intention because she has begun to value his friendship.

Next we have another example of Eli's cruel curse. She can't even enjoy a simple, sweet piece of candy, vomiting behind the store. They have each made a gesture toward the friendship of the other and neither one turned out exactly how they hoped.

Then we have the most heart breaking/warming hug in the history of hugdom.

Last but certainly not least we have Oskar's admission of feelings for Eli after her inquiry into the matter and then the mysterious almost guilty question, "If I wasn't a girl...would you like me anyway?"

Well, that's my favorite scene in a nutshell. ;)

I like moonvibe's pick too. It gives people the basic premise without giving too much away. Don't forget that kitty-cat. :)
