My vote for the most similar story goes to The Nutcracker. The 1993 film had Macaulay Caulkin in it.
Have to also mention Pan's Labyrinth.
"Can we die?" "Of course we can." Eli put his hand on his heart, felt the slow beats. Maybe it was because he was a child. Maybe that was why he hadn't put an end to it. The pangs of conscience were weaker than his will to live.

I don't know the 1993 version.
Strange, I figured you were going to mention Twilight.

And Hakan playing the role of both the jealous Tinker Bell and Captain Hook, as the Zombie Hakan.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

thank you Intrige and Gattoparde for that extremely disturbing image.

nearly forgot about this one
Bridge to Terabithia
It's actually a movie for young people but it's also suitable for open minded adults. It becomes pretty emotional and sad towards the end so you've been warned.

The movie made me think about it even weeks after watching it the for the first time.
similarities:
Two bullied kids at the edge of puberty meet each other and get stronger through their relationship.
Strong performances by the two child actors. Especially Anna-Sophia-Robb is amazing here!
Tip: Don't mind so much the marketing of the movie. It's more a social drama than a fantasy flick.

The book was a whole lot better.

Mononoke Hime?

YES!! Princess Mononoke is a great movie! I actually watched it for the first time in a while a few weeks back and it reminded me of LTROI.
I'm beginning to question how much stuff is actually like LTROI or if my obsession just allows me to find/see things that I can then relate back.
