Probably on the train gettin' outta Dodge! Most other places are too dangerous. Oskar's dads place would probably be OK; at least it would be if Dad kept the darned door locked so drunks can't just walk in uninvited.

It could be political; perhaps Lacke wasn't a Social Democrat. Also Virginia had dumped him, and he obviously had a drinking problem. I've known several people with drinking problems, and it causes their behaviour (and thought processes) to become very erratic. An uncle of mine was a really nice guy when he had a few drinks in him, but when he did finally quit drinking, no one could stand to be around him. That's what booze does to many people over the long term.

It might be OK if you really like cats. And didn't mind a clothespin on your nose.

Question: if Blackeberg is nice, why was Lacke so unhappy with it? You know--about all that social engineering gone wrong, etc. I sense a logical disconnect here... or maybe it's just better now than it was in the '80s.
That's a little bit better explained in the book.

At the begining of the history, Blackberg is presented as a place builded following modern principles just for people to move in the city as they need a place to live on, not a place risen from the natural flow of the human constructions, just a carefully planned suburb without history, without a past, without a church, that is why he says it's just... wrong.

I like how the weird monologue of Lacke about how the buildings are all wrong is referenced in the film, just before the cats scene I think.

Edit: I found the full monologue:
I don't want to be here anymore!"
"You don't have to. Not for my . . ."
"No, not that. Here. The whole shebang. Blackeberg. Everything. These buildings, the walking paths, the spaces, people, everything is just... like a single big damn sickness, see? Something went wrong. They thought all this out, planned it to be ... perfect, you know. And in some damn wrinkle it went wrong, instead. Some shit.
"Like ... I can't explain it. .. like they had some idea about the angles, or fucking whatever, the angles of the buildings, in their relation to each other, you know. So it would be harmonious or something. And then they made a mistake in their measurements, their triangulation, whatever the hell they call it, so that it was all a little off from the start, and it went downhill from there. So you walk here with all these buildings and you just feel that... no. No, no, no. You shouldn't be here. This place is all wrong, you know?
"Except it isn't the angles, it's something else, something that just. . . like a disease that's in the . . . walls and I. . . don't want any part of it anymore."
Then, window, let day in, and let life out.

It depends on where ELI would be at that moment. 8-)

I recently saw a job posting for a company in Stockholm where my skills are a good match. My imagination took off, then, thinking about the "what ifs": What if I applied? What if they were willing to fly me there for an interview? What if I got there and had time to visit Blackeberg, where would I go first, second, third? So, in a way I was already running through what you are asking here. Well, my answer is much the same route as ACLs. But I would be arriving by the train, so downtown is first. Then I would head to Oskar's place. I would have to check out Sabbis and the Lover's Kiosk on the way. Maybe the pool house and the school too! But from Oskar's place, then Eli's and then the jungle gym. If I had more time, I'd wander down to China Park and see that area, plus the sledding hill. From there, over to the overpass and Gosta's window. From there, hmmm, likely back to Ibsengaten and just hang out in the courtyard. What if they hired me and my family moved there? How far is Blackeberg from Stockholm on the subway? Could we live there while I commute into the city? ... The thoughts go on and on. I would have to sit on the jungle gym for a long time and ponder them all.

The pizza at Restaurang Dizin next to Virginias working place is quite good, and they got some good bottled lagers, too! :)

@GK: The subway trip Central Station - Blackeberg is about 24 minutes.
