Perhaps it's larger than Eli him/herself in that the love we feel would also be freely given to anyone in Eli's dire predicament. Not so much who she is as a person, but a response to her terrible situation.
To love her and believe in her, despite the fact she only exists in fiction, does terrible things there, and is "not a normal human being", is not a result of who she is as a person/character, but a reflection of who we are ourselves.
It's quite as irrational as Tinkerbell's "Everytime you say "I don't believe in fairies", a fairy dies." But that sort of irrationality IMO is a very commendable human trait.

I think the way in which Lina plays the role of Eli also has much to do with such love. Had it been a different actress with less talent, we probably wouldn't be so fond of her...

You know, I find that as I progress on my journey to gain a better understanding of Eli, I end up loving Eli all the more.

It's like, at first, when I learn my previous perception about Eli was wrong, I'm shocked and uncomfortable. Slowly, I warm up to my revised view of Eli, though, and end up having a better appreciation for Eli and the relationship between Eli and Oskar.

I'd like to take this time to reiterate my love for Jocke :D

Poor, poor, guy

EDIT: I'd also like to add the qualifier that Eli needed to eat, so I mean that made o.k..
Well, the way I imagine it, Eli and Oskar are happy forever being vampires, working seasonally at a blood-bank with poor book-keeping skills.

This is how I felt during the "how old are you?" scene.

This really made me laugh because it's so true.

It got me thinking about how we might express our feelings for Eli visually, without screenies from the film. This actually turned out to be harder than I thought, but here are some near-misses...

The first one, the soldier's, is very touching by the way.

Truth.
