Re: Thoughts about Let The Old Dreams Die !!!SPOILERS!!!
Well, I got my bedtime story, many thanks to drakkar! (Tack fa allt!
)
What a fantastic story!
Even though they are barely mentioned, Eli and Oskar (and love) are still the driving forces of the story, bringing together Stefan and Karin.
I get a better sense from their descriptions in the photograph of just how dangerous Eli, (and now Oskar) would be if I came across them in a dark alley. The description of how they moved through the darkness in the background, the sense that they were feral predators is exactly how I imagined they would be if they were vampires together.
It is hard to put into words how it makes me feel to know that they are still out there, still together...but it is a good feeling. The next time I am walking through some European city at night with my backpack on just won't be the same...less safe maybe, and I know I will always be looking out for them.
Thank-you Mr. Lindqvist, for this awesomely ambiguous and very beautiful "ending".
I haven't slept as well as I did last night since I returned from Sweden last week.

Okay, Mr. Christensen...just remember, if you're camping out at Tyresta and you hear someone crying in the woods...stay in your tent!covenant6452 wrote:The next time I am walking through some European city at night with my backpack on just won't be the same...less safe maybe, and I know I will always be looking out for them.

Has anyone yet noticed (those lucky enough to read Swedish, or to have a friend who can read it to you
Were the hands used to this effect in the original novel, or was the theme something TA and JAL introduced only in the film?
Or maybe some certain special author has high regard for a certain special canine forum moderator and his certain special essay on hands ?

Don't forget - this has all been foretold.a_contemplative_life wrote:Seems to me, having read the spoilers here, that Wolfie is the fan fiction author who came closest to imagining Oskar's turning as JAL did. (http://let-the-right-one-in.com/fancontent/ff/letters). Maybe there's a psychic link between JAL and him?![]()
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Looking at this thread makes me miss Eli and Oskar. I can't wait for the English translation to come out.

Wow! A magical epilogue indeed. Experiencing the story through the account of a narrator was charming and personal. For me, the narration made it feel more "real."
JAL is brilliant! His humor, compassion, intrigue and colorful musings were all present in the story and served its purpose well. The pace of the story was just right. The tid bits about LTROI (the pool massacre info, a happy Oskar in the subway at 2 in the morning, Jocke's frozen corpse, Lacke's demise, ect...) were like bread crumbs leading down an entirely new yet familiar path. It was like following the characters down memory lane while discovering their involvement in those memories. What a trip!
As I eagerly waited for any revelation concerning Oskar and Eli I became invested in Stefan and Karin's tale, finding myself more and more concerned with their story. The way these character's lives intertwined to unwittingly reveal the fate of Oskar and Eli to the reader assembled like a fun puzzle that painted a beautiful picture of love and friendship.
The epilogue left me very satisfied with its glimpse of Oskar and Eli, inspired by Stefan and Karin's relationship and a little sad for the lonely narrator, though I suppose his philosophy on life and an encounter with a great love will sustain him.
